Are the Texas Longhorns back yet? Or is that a question we will have to wait to answer in the future? The answer lays withing the head coach’s office at the University of Texas. It is no doubt that Steve Sarkisian has the Texas program finally rolling in the right direction after 14 years is mediocre football to Texas standards. Thanks to recruiting and his ability to attract talent out of the transfer portal he was able to go from 5 wins his first season to possible playoff contention just two years later. The season is far from over and there will be several hurdles to overcome for Sarkisian this year. The team has the talent to beat any team in the country, it is not the talent that Texas fans doubt but instead the coaching and how can you blame them? Remember how I mentioned 14 years of mediocre football? There was also 14 years of mediocre coaching going on down in Austin that Texas fans would say set back their beloved program for many years. The Charlie Strong era was one too forget for Texas fans as he went 16-21 in 37 career games as the head man in Austin. In three seasons Strong was only about to reach a bowl game just once… yes just once and who can forget the Kansas lose that put the final nail in the coffin. After Strong was escorted out of Austin, the powers at be brought in a young and energetic Tom Herman who should glimpses of greatness at his times at Houston and his miracle run at the CFP national championship as the Ohio State OC. Herman started out great at Texas as he quickly learned how to recruit at a blueblood school in Texas as he posted top 3 classes in both 2018 and 2019. Not only did he show his recruiting talent right away, but he showed some promise on the X and O side of things as he placed a Sugar Bowl trophy in the trophy case in only his second year. Alot of good things for Herman so far, right? Yes, but this was also his downfall, with success comes ridicule. The next two years for Herman came with a lot of promise and hype but no delivery as he failed to reach double digit wins again. The success of Steve Sarkisian did not help either, he was dialing up brilliant game plans as he went on to help Alabama and Nick Saban win yet another championship in 2020. It was a surprise when Texas AD Chris Del Conte pulled the trigger on an OC over an established head coach elsewhere but so far it has been paying off. Is Texas back? The answer is quite simple, it all relies on the shoulders of Steve Sarkisian.
